Used & Remanufactured Volvo CE Parts: Buyer’s Guide to Reman Quality & Cost

Key Features

Understanding Remanufactured (Reman) Parts for Volvo CE Machines

Remanufactured parts — commonly called “reman” — are worn components that have been completely disassembled, cleaned, inspected, and rebuilt to original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specification using new or reconditioned sub-components. The key difference from simply refurbished or repaired parts is that reman meets the same dimensional, metallurgical, and performance specifications as a new OEM part. For expensive components like hydraulic pumps, travel motors, swing motors, and cylinder heads, reman can offer 40–65% cost savings versus new OEM with equivalent performance.

Reman vs Used vs OEM — Decision Framework

Factor OEM New Remanufactured Used/Second-Hand
Price vs new OEM 100% 40–65% 20–50%
Warranty 12 months (Volvo) 6–12 months None or ‘as-is’
Expected life Full OEM specification OEM specification Unknown — depends on history
Availability Stock or 1–5 day order Stock or exchange basis Depends on donor machine availability
Quality consistency 100% consistent Consistent if reputable remanufacturer Highly variable
Exchange core required No Yes — old part returned No
Best application Safety-critical parts, new machine High-cost components, mid-life rebuild Low-risk cosmetic or simple mechanical

Best Candidates for Reman on Volvo CE Machines

Not every component is a good candidate for remanufacturing. The economics work best for high-value components where reman is 35–60% of new OEM cost, and where the component failure mode lends itself to rebuild (precision-machined housings with replaceable internal components). The best reman candidates on Volvo CE machines are:

Component Typical New OEM Cost Reman Saving Reman Recommended?
Main Hydraulic Pump $4,000–$8,000 40–55% Yes — excellent reman option
Travel Motor (each) $2,500–$5,000 40–55% Yes — reman widely available
Swing Motor $2,000–$4,500 40–55% Yes — common reman item
Cylinder Head (engine) $1,500–$3,000 35–50% Yes — established reman process
Turbocharger $800–$2,500 35–50% Yes — cartridge replacement also option
Starter Motor $300–$600 30–45% Sometimes — new may be close in price
Alternator $400–$800 30–45% Sometimes — evaluate case by case
Control Valve (main) $5,000–$12,000 40–55% Yes — high value, good reman candidate
Slewing Ring $2,000–$6,000 N/A — replace with new OEM No — do not reman slewing rings
Track Shoes / Rollers $2,000–$8,000 set N/A — new OEM recommended No — wear items, new is better

How to Evaluate a Remanufacturer

Quality remanufacturing is not the same as repair or refurbishment. A genuine remanufacturer will disassemble to component level, measure all tolerances against OEM specification, replace all wear items (bearings, seals, shims, springs) with new components, pressure test and performance test before dispatch, and provide a written warranty with exchange core policy. Warning signs of low-quality reman include: no core exchange requirement, very short warranty (under 3 months), inability to provide test results, and pricing that is less than 25% of new OEM (usually indicates patch repair rather than genuine remanufacturing).
