Volvo CE Air Conditioning & Cab Climate Guide: A/C Parts & Troubleshooting

Key Features

Volvo CE Cab Climate Systems — Overview

Volvo’s ROPS/FOPS-certified cabs on excavators, wheel loaders, and articulated haulers include sophisticated climate systems designed for extreme operating conditions. The standard system includes a roof-mounted air conditioning unit using R134a refrigerant, combined heating using engine coolant, and in newer models, integrated cab pressure filtration to keep dust out. VMP Spares stocks OEM A/C and heating components for all current Volvo CE machine families.

A/C System Components — Parts Guide

Component OEM Part Numbers Service Notes
A/C Compressor (belt-driven) 14524010, 14524012 Replace if seized or noisy — check clutch engagement first
Compressor Clutch Coil 14524015, 14524017 Replace before compressor if clutch slipping
Condenser Unit (roof) 14524020, 14524022 Clean fins annually — replace if fins >30% blocked
Evaporator Core 14524025, 14524027 Replace if blocked or leaking — check drain first
Receiver/Dryer 14524030, 14524032 Replace every 2–3 years or after system open
Expansion Valve 14524035, 14524037 Replace with dryer if frost on suction line
A/C Pressure Switch (high) 14524040, 14524042 Cuts compressor at overpressure — test before replacing
A/C Pressure Switch (low) 14524045, 14524047 Prevents compressor run without refrigerant
Cab Air Filter (fresh air) 11110800, 11110802 Replace every 500 hrs or when discoloured
Cab Air Filter (recirculation) 11110805, 11110807 Replace every 1,000 hrs
Heater Core 14524050, 14524052 Replace if leaking coolant into cab
Blower Motor 14524055, 14524057 Replace if noisy or speed control lost

Common A/C Faults — Troubleshooting Guide

Fault Likely Cause Fix
No cold air — compressor not engaging Low refrigerant / pressure switch cut-out Check refrigerant charge, test pressure switches
No cold air — compressor running Failed expansion valve / blocked evaporator Check evaporator temperature, replace EXV
Water dripping inside cab Blocked evaporator drain Clear drain line — check for mould growth
A/C noisy (clunking) Compressor reed valves failing Replace compressor
Heater not working Low coolant level / heater core blocked Check coolant, flush heater circuit
Bad smell from vents Mould on evaporator or recirculation filter Replace filter, clean evaporator with biocide
Blower only works on high speed Blower resistor failure Replace blower resistor pack

Annual A/C Service Checklist

Volvo recommends annual A/C system inspection before the hot season. Key items to check: refrigerant charge (correct R134a level), all rubber hose conditions (cracks or hardening), condenser fin condition and cleanliness, cab filter replacement, compressor belt tension and clutch gap (typically 0.4–0.6mm), and evaporator drain tube clearance. A well-maintained A/C system on a Volvo CE machine can run 15,000+ hours without major component failure.
