Hydraulic Cylinder Seals: The Most Common Hydraulic Repair on Volvo CE Equipment
Hydraulic cylinder seal failure is the single most frequent hydraulic repair on Volvo construction equipment. Unlike pump or motor failures — which are expensive, sudden and often catastrophic — cylinder seal wear is gradual and predictable. A well-maintained machine will need multiple seal kit replacements across its service life. Identifying seal failure early, ordering the correct kit for the specific cylinder and model, and resealing before internal scoring occurs is the difference between a €150 seal kit and a €3,000+ cylinder replacement. This guide covers everything an operator or fleet manager needs to know about Volvo CE hydraulic cylinder seals.
How Hydraulic Cylinder Seals Fail
A hydraulic cylinder uses three distinct seal types: the rod seal (prevents oil leaking past the piston rod to the outside), the piston seal (prevents oil bypassing the piston internally — causes cylinder drift when failed), and the wiper seal / dust seal (prevents contamination entering along the rod). Each fails for different reasons and presents different symptoms.
| Seal Type | Failure Symptom | Root Cause |
|---|---|---|
| Rod seal | Oil weeping / dripping down outside of cylinder rod | Age, contamination, rod surface damage |
| Piston seal | Cylinder drifts / won’t hold position under load | Seal wear, contaminated oil, scoring |
| Wiper / dust seal | Dirt entering cylinder; accelerated internal wear | Impact damage, hardening from UV/heat |
| Buffer seal | Pressure spikes cause rod seal bypass | Hydraulic shock loads without buffer protection |
Cylinder Seal Kits by Machine Application
On a standard crawler excavator, there are five hydraulic cylinders requiring regular seal attention: boom cylinder (×1 or ×2 depending on model), arm/stick cylinder (×1), bucket cylinder (×1) and the blade cylinder on machines fitted with a dozer blade. Each cylinder has a unique bore diameter and rod diameter that determines the seal kit specification.
Critical ordering rule: Seal kits are not universal — they are specific to the cylinder bore, rod diameter and model variant. Always provide your machine model, serial number and which cylinder you are resealing when ordering. Attempting to fit a seal kit from a different bore size will result in immediate leakage or cylinder damage. VMP Spares cross-references seal kits against Volvo’s original part numbers to ensure the correct specification is supplied.

When to Reseal vs When to Replace the Cylinder
A resealing is always the first approach when cylinder weeping is detected at the rod seal stage. However, if the cylinder has been leaking for an extended period without repair, the rod surface may be scored by abrasive particles entering past the failed wiper seal. A scored rod will destroy a new rod seal within hours — the rod must be re-chromed or the cylinder replaced before resealing is attempted. Before ordering a seal kit, inspect the rod surface: a smooth, chrome surface with no pitting or scoring indicates a straightforward reseal. Pitting, scoring or rust indicates the rod requires surface restoration first.
Internal piston seal failure (causing cylinder drift) is more serious. Cylinder drift means uncontrolled movement under load — a safety issue as well as a performance issue. Internal inspection requires cylinder removal and disassembly; if the bore surface is scored, a seal kit will not provide a lasting repair and cylinder replacement or bore honing is required.
Cylinder Seal Maintenance — Best Practices
| Action | Interval | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Inspect rod seals for weeping | 500 hrs | Catch failure before rod scoring occurs |
| Wipe rod clean before retraction | Daily | Prevents abrasive particles entering on retraction |
| Check hydraulic oil cleanliness | 1,000 hrs | Contaminated oil accelerates piston seal wear |
| Grease cylinder pivot pins | 50 hrs | Prevents pin/bushing wear that causes cylinder misalignment |
| Park machine with cylinders retracted | When possible | Protects exposed rod from UV, corrosion and impact |
