Volvo CE Stage V & Tier 4 Final Aftertreatment Guide: DPF, SCR & DEF Parts

Key Features

Stage V / Tier 4 Final: What the Aftertreatment System Does

Volvo CE machines built from 2019 onwards for European and North American markets comply with EU Stage V and EPA Tier 4 Final emissions regulations — the strictest diesel emission standards in the world. These regulations limit particulate matter (PM) to 0.015 g/kWh and NOx to 0.4 g/kWh, requiring sophisticated exhaust aftertreatment systems that didn’t exist in previous machine generations. VMP Spares stocks a complete range of aftertreatment system parts for all Stage V and Tier 4 Final Volvo CE machines.

Aftertreatment Components Explained

Component Function Service Notes
DOC — Diesel Oxidation Catalyst Oxidises CO and HC, raises exhaust temp for DPF regeneration Clean annually — replace if conversion efficiency <80%
DPF — Diesel Particulate Filter Traps soot particles — regenerates passively above 300°C Forced regeneration every 500 hrs, replace at 6,000–8,000 hrs
SCR — Selective Catalytic Reduction Reduces NOx using DEF (AdBlue) injection Inspect annually — de-canning if crystallised DEF deposit
DEF Doser Precisely injects aqueous urea into exhaust before SCR Replace every 4,000 hrs or on fault code
DEF Pump Pressurises DEF supply to doser Replace on failure — purges at shutdown to prevent freezing
NOx Sensor (upstream) Monitors engine-out NOx for SCR control Replace on drift or fault code — calibrate after replacement
NOx Sensor (downstream) Verifies SCR efficiency — triggers derate if SCR fails Replace as pair with upstream sensor
Temperature Sensors (×3) DOC inlet, DPF inlet/outlet, SCR inlet Replace on fault code — check connector corrosion first
Differential Pressure Sensor Monitors DPF soot loading for regeneration trigger Replace on drift — check pipes for soot blockage first
ASC — Ammonia Slip Catalyst Converts excess NH₃ from SCR to N₂ Replace with SCR at major overhaul

DEF / AdBlue — What You Need to Know

DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid, sold as AdBlue® in Europe) is a 32.5% aqueous urea solution that must meet ISO 22241 quality standard. Using incorrect DEF or contaminated DEF is one of the most common causes of SCR system failure — crystallised urea deposits can permanently block the SCR catalyst. Key DEF system maintenance points: fill DEF tank before it reaches reserve level (0%), use only ISO 22241 certified DEF, keep DEF tank filled to avoid prolonged heating/cooling cycles, and have the DEF pump purge cycle complete at each shutdown.

DPF Regeneration — Active vs. Passive

The DPF traps soot particles and must periodically burn them off in a regeneration event. Passive regeneration occurs automatically when exhaust temperatures are high enough (typically sustained highway or hard work cycles). Active (forced) regeneration is triggered by the ECM when soot loading reaches ~50% — the machine increases engine load and fuel injection to raise exhaust temperature to 600°C+ to burn the trapped soot. If active regeneration is interrupted repeatedly, a parked regeneration or dealer-level manual regeneration is required. Signs that DPF regeneration is failing include increased fuel consumption, reduced power, and eventually a derate to protect the system.

Stage V Parts Availability — Volvo CE

VMP Spares maintains stock of the most common Stage V failure items for fast dispatch. Due to the complexity of these systems, we strongly recommend sharing your machine serial number and fault codes when ordering — this ensures you receive parts for the correct emission tier and engine specification.
