Volvo L90 Wheel Loader Parts Guide: Hydraulics, Transmission & Engine

Key Features

Volvo L90: The Versatile Mid-Size Wheel Loader Parts Guide

The Volvo L90 series is one of the most widely deployed mid-size wheel loaders globally. Ranging from the L90D through the L90H, this machine class covers a 14–17 tonne operating weight range with a 2.1–3.1 m³ bucket capacity. Used in aggregate handling, construction, farming, and port operations, the L90 demands reliable parts support across its full service life. VMP Spares stocks comprehensive coverage for the L90 range — → browse Volvo wheel loader parts or contact us for L90-specific references.

L90 Generation & Serial Number Guide

The L90 has evolved through four major generations, each with significant engineering changes. Engine, transmission, and hydraulic system components are generation-specific and often not interchangeable. Always identify your serial number before ordering:

Generation Serial Range Engine Key Technology
L90D 4001– D7D – 148 kW Powershift 4-speed, basic hydraulics
L90E 60001– D7E – 148 kW OptiShift, lock-up torque converter
L90F 100001– D8K – 165 kW Improved boom geometry, eco mode
L90G 150001– D8K – 165 kW Active Control, Volvo Co-Pilot display
L90H 200001– D8K – 174 kW Stage V, electric auxiliary pump option

Transmission & Drivetrain Parts

The L90 uses Volvo’s own powershift transmission with integrated torque converter lock-up (from L90E onwards). The OptiShift function on E and later models eliminates torque converter slip during loading cycles, saving significant fuel. Common transmission wear items include clutch pack seals, modulation valve kits, and filter elements. → Browse L90 transmission parts and hydrostatic drive components:

Drivetrain Part Notes Interval
Transmission oil filter Spin-on type, change with oil Every 1,000h
Transmission oil (20L) Volvo WB 101 or equivalent ATF Every 2,000h
Torque converter seal kit Internal seals + o-rings At leak or rebuild
Front axle oil API GL-5 80W-90 Every 2,000h
Rear axle oil Same spec, separate fill Every 2,000h
Driveshaft universal joint Greaseable type, inspect pins & bearings Grease every 500h
Differential lock solenoid Electro-hydraulic on G/H models Test every service

Hydraulic Lift & Tilt System

The L90’s Z-bar or TP (third parallel) linkage uses a dual-element hydraulic circuit — one pump for the lift/tilt circuit and a separate circuit for steering. Common hydraulic issues include boom drift (lift valve seal wear), sluggish tilt (tilt cylinder seal degradation), and steering wander (steering cylinder or orbitrol wear). → L90 hydraulic system parts:

Hydraulic Component Part Number Notes
Main hydraulic pump VOE11110838 Gear pump, lift & tilt circuit
Steering pump VOE11110840 Separate gear pump
Orbitrol steering unit VOE11110842 Priority valve included
Lift cylinder seal kit VOE11110845 Full bore + rod kit per cylinder
Tilt cylinder seal kit VOE11110846 Includes wiper and buffer seals
Hydraulic oil filter VOE11110850 Return line, 10 micron element
Control valve block VOE11110852 3-spool, L90E/F/G/H

Engine Service Parts: D7D, D7E & D8K

The L90 has used three different engine families across its production life. The D7D (150 series), D7E (E series), and D8K (F/G/H series) each have unique filter and service parts. Using the wrong filter part number is a common mistake — always verify against your serial number. → L90 engine parts and fuel system components:

Brakes & Steering

The L90 uses wet disc brakes on all four wheels — integrated within the axle hub assemblies. These are extremely durable in normal conditions but are vulnerable to contaminated brake oil or improper fluid top-up. The steering system is a full-hydraulic orbitrol with load-sensing — steering feel issues are usually traced to the orbitrol unit or steering cylinder seals. → L90 brake system parts and steering components:

Brake/Steering Part Notes
Wet disc brake kit (per wheel) Friction discs + steel plates, matched set
Brake oil (transmission oil) Same oil as transmission — shared circuit on most models
Steering cylinder seal kit Per cylinder, bore + rod seals
Orbitrol steering unit Complete unit replacement if internal wear
Parking brake cable/actuator Spring-applied, cable-operated on older models

Cab, Electrical & Lighting

The L90 cab is ROPS/FOPS certified and on G/H variants includes the Volvo Co-Pilot display and auto-lubrication system. Electrical faults are common in dusty or wet environments — prioritise connector inspection and harness routing checks. → L90 electrical parts and cab & work lighting:

Electrical/Cab Component Notes
Main wiring harness Frame section, cab section — order separately
Instrument panel Model-specific: D/E differ from F/G/H
Alternator 95A 24V, required for full electrical load
Starter motor 5.4kW D7D/D7E fitment
Front working lights LED upgrade available for older models
Rear combination lights Tail, brake, indicator combined unit

L90 Maintenance Schedule Summary
